FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions about urinary incontinence.
What is urinary incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. There are different types and possible causes, so assessment can help determine the appropriate next step.
What is stress incontinence vs urge incontinence?
Stress incontinence involves urine leakage when pressure is placed on the bladder, such as with coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting or exercise.
Urge incontinence involves a sudden, strong need to urinate that may be difficult to control and can result in leakage.
Some women experience a combination of both.
What treatment options are available for urinary incontinence?
Treatment depends on the type, cause and severity of your symptoms. Depending on your individual circumstances, your clinician may discuss conservative approaches, further assessment, referral or other treatment options.
Why does bladder leakage need to be assessed before treatment?
Bladder leakage can have different causes. Your clinician may review the type and duration of your symptoms, infection symptoms, childbirth history, menopause, medicines, pelvic floor factors and symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse.
Depending on your circumstances, urine testing, GP review, pelvic floor physiotherapy, continence care or referral to a gynaecologist or urologist may be recommended.
What conservative treatment options might be discussed?
Depending on the cause of your symptoms, pelvic floor physiotherapy, bladder strategies, medical review and other conservative approaches may be discussed. Specialist referral may also be recommended where appropriate.
Is urinary incontinence laser treatment available?
Fotona laser treatment for selected urinary incontinence concerns may be discussed after your consultation and assessment. It is available in Sydney and Melbourne only and is not suitable for every patient.
Will I need further assessment?
Not necessarily. Your clinician will assess your symptoms and medical history and may recommend further investigation or referral where appropriate.
Can I begin with a telehealth consultation?
Yes. Telehealth can provide a private first step to discuss your symptoms and understand what assessment or care may be appropriate. An examination, investigation or referral may still be recommended.
